What is Discernment? 

“Discernment” is the term we use to describe “figuring out” God’s plan for your life, also known as your vocation. God has a big, beautiful plan for your life, and he’ll communicate that plan to you through your own gifts and talents, and through your own desires and passions. 

So discernment isn’t just asking, “What do I want to do with my life?” And it’s also not just asking, “What does God want me to do with my life?” It’s seeking what God is inviting you to do with your life, communicated through your deepest desires. 

Discernment cannot be done in a vacuum, or just in your own head. To discern priesthood, consecrated life, the permanent diaconate, or marriage, you have to be in conversation with people who can help you.
